# MiniMessage tags

MiniMessage tags allowed in player messages and their permissions.

ChatChat only parses the MiniMessage tags that the sender has permission to use. Grant the matching `chatchat.tag.<tag>` permission to enable each tag.

The MiniMessage tag syntax and arguments are documented in the [MiniMessage reference](https://docs.papermc.io/adventure/minimessage/format/). For example, `<sprite:blocks:block/stone>` inserts a resource-pack sprite, and `<head:entity/player/wide/steve>` displays a player head. The `<sprite>` and `<head>` tags require Paper 1.21.9 or later (Adventure 4.25.0).

The tag syntax is `<insert>`; its permission is named `chatchat.tag.insertion`. The `chatchat.tag.translatable` permission enables `<lang>`, while `chatchat.tag.translatable-fallback` enables the `<lang_or>` fallback form.

## URLs and item display

`chatchat.url` automatically makes URLs in chat messages clickable. It defaults to operators.

The `<item>` tag displays the item in the sender's main hand in a chat message. `item-format` and `item-format-info` in `settings.yml` control its display and hover text. The item format must include `<item>`; `<amount>` is also available inside that format.

## Configured tags

Custom tags can be defined in `placeholders.yml`. Players need `chatchat.tag.placeholder.<name>` to use those tags in their own messages; this permission defaults to operators. See [Placeholders](/helpchat-plugins/chatchat/placeholders.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://wiki.helpch.at/helpchat-plugins/chatchat/tags.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
